Michael Francis, conductor
Mitchell Kuhn, oboe

Ahmed Alabaca: Across the Calm Waters of Heaven – A Piece for Peace
Tomaso Albinoni: Concerto for Oboe No. 2
Max Richter: On the Nature of Daylight
Vaughan Williams: Variations on a Theme by Thomas Tallis
Barber: Adagio for Strings

After living in a pandemic for a year, you deserve these precious moments of beauty and peace, featuring Barber’s Adagio for Strings, one of the most recognizable pieces of classical music in the world, famously featured in the stirring 1986 Vietnam war film Platoon. Michael Francis starts the concert with Ahmed Alabaca’s Across the Calm Waters of Heaven – A Piece for Peace, written after the mass shooting in San Bernardino, Calif., in 2015, that “captures the inextinguishable spark of human goodness.” Albinoni’s lovely Concerto for Oboe No. 2 features soloist Mitchell Kuhn. In On the Nature of Daylight, composer Max Richter creates a “sense of luminosity and brightness.”
