Mozart’s Horn Concerto

Daniel Black, conductor
David Smith, horn

Alberto Ginastera: Variaciones Concertantes
Mozart: Horn Concerto No. 3
Prokofiev: Symphony No. 1

TFO’s David Smith shines in Mozart’s Horn Concerto No. 3, designed for a true virtuoso. Also on the program is Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 1, “Classical,” one of the composer’s most famous works. Though it was written in 1917, it harkens back to the older style of Haydn. Getting the concert started is Alberto Ginastera’s Variaciones Concertantes, a series of 12 short variations that feature every instrument of the orchestra.

PRE-CONCERT CONVERSATION: What's a Mannheim rocket? And why did Mozart leave little notes to the soloist in his horn concerto? Resident Conductor Daniel Black and General Manager Edward Parsons tell all about this weekend's Soundwaves concert, Mozart's Horn Concerto. Click here to watch the online pre-concert conversation.

MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL HORN DAVID SMITH: David Smith first learned Mozart's Horn Concerto No. 3 when he was just 15 years old, and it still holds a special place in his heart. Hear his story before the performance this weekend. Click here to watch.
