Mendelssohn’s Reformation Symphony

Michael Francis, conductor
Nancy Chang, violin
Sarah Shellman, violin

Bach/Webern: Fuga (No. 2 “Ricercata”) from “The Musical Offering”
Bach: Concerto for Two Violins
Mendelssohn: Symphony No. 5, “Reformation”

Shimmering with some of Mendelssohn’s most thrilling music, his Symphony No. 5 often did not receive the accolades it deserved. “It’s bigger than most people might understand because it’s about religious tolerance. There’s a sense of him letting go of his past, of the anti-Semitism,” said Music Director Michael Francis. At the heart of Bach’s Concerto for Two Violins is a sublime movement that seems to sing, featuring TFO’s Nancy Chang and Sarah Shellman. Plus, Bach’s Fuga (No. 2 Ricercata) from “The Musical Offering.”

Pre-Concert Conversation: Go deeper into the power of Mendelssohn's Reformation Symphony and the poetry of Bach's Concerto for Two Violins in this Pre-concert Conversation video. TFO musicians perform excerpts, with key insight from Michael Francis and Ed Parsons.
