Prokofiev: Suite from Romeo and Juliet
Sergei Prokofiev took it upon himself to write a happy ending to one of the most tragic works in history – which he revised before the Romeo and Juliet ballet premiere in 1938. George Gershwin synthesized American jazz and dance into a “classical” form for his Piano Concerto in F, performed by Sara Davis Buechner. For her Winter Bells symphonic poem, Polina Nazaykinskaya was inspired by an ancient village near the Volga River, not far from where she was born in southern Russia. Akiko Fujimoto conducts.
