This program will be performed without intermission.

Maestro Michael Francis conducts the pinnacle of symphonies, bringing audiences to their feet to rejoice in the Ode to Joy chorus, featuring The Master Chorale of Tampa Bay. Beethoven apparently contemplated more than 200 versions of the Ode to Joy theme before he settled on one, like he knew the symphony would carry the weight of history: On Christmas Day 1989, Leonard Bernstein conducted it to celebrate the historic fall of the Berlin Wall, changing “joy” to “freedom” in the Ode to Joy chorus. The symphony was an immediate hit at its premiere in 1824 in Vienna.

As of Jan. 5, 2022, (effective until further notice) for indoor, public, ticketed events, all attendees ages 5 and up must show proof of a negative COVID-19 test certified by a test provider to gain entrance to all performances at the Straz Center. In the alternative, attendees can voluntarily present a CDC vaccination card showing that the attendee is fully vaccinated (“fully vaccinated” means that at least two weeks have passed since the last required dose). Adults must also show photo ID.  In addition, the Straz Center has implemented a new bag size policy.
